Swelled Up thoughts with Mpho Makhale on Bonang Matheba’s reality show

Mpho Makhale is the founder and owner of the virtual men’s fashion styling and buying platform, Material Boy ZA. He shares his thoughts about the recently debuted Bonang Matheba reality show, Being Bonang.

When I heard Bonang Matheba will have her own reality show, to say that I was thrilled was an understatement. I set the date on my calendar and even went as far as upgrading my DStv bouquet. Weeks drew closer and it was time for the show to air.

Anyone who knows me knows for a fact that I am a die hard Bonang fan, she’s the Queen of all media, businesswoman and a fashion icon. Her work speaks for itself and you can’t help but fall in love with the beautiful garden that is her mind. She’s beautiful, talented, works extremely hard and she inspires everyone. She’s a definite IT girl.

The show premiered on Friday 7:30 on Vuzu Amp. I invited a few friends over and in true Bonang Matheba style we popped a bottle of Champagne and we were all excited to see a glimpse of her famously glamorous life.

The first insert shows Bonang at her boyfriend’s house, Keenan AKA Forbes.20271896_1557828227582511_2027948244_n

A brief summary

The ‘reality’ show ends and as a fan, I’m slightly disappointed because I was expecting so much more. Firstly, anyone looking for information about Bonang would be well-advised to look elsewhere, because this show gives you nothing but a few giggles here and there.

This closed-off star reveals only the barest details, like her love for her Boyfriend, best friend and her frustration when things aren’t done the right way.

The second episode aired and again it left me feeling all kinds of emotions. Under the glare of a reality camera, Bonang Matheba seems to be putting on a show rather than just ‘BEING’ herself.

I hate comparisons but all the celebrities who’ve managed to make their reality show a success understand its de-glamourizing potential; to really do well on reality TV, one needs to be willing to seem mundane and gross. Dineo Ranaka, for instance, may wear couture on the red carpet, but she spends her time on Dineo’s Diary discussing minor medical procedures and petty dramas with her sisters. Somizi Mhlongo on Living the Dream shares everything with viewers from his Mothers house in Soweto to sharing his deepest fear when he thought he wouldn’t make it on Metro FM.

We understand Bonang Matheba guards her Brand and is a very private person, but what’s the use of this show if she only shows the UPS? And not the down?

The show is only two episodes in, maybe Being Bonang will turn around and shock us with tears and serve some realness. Then again the more outsized your celebrity status, the more you have to lose by puncturing it. Something Bonang knows all too well.

Maybe Doll face; OTLO GO RE TLHATLHAMOLLA. 🥂
